Annie Cicale Graphic Designer, Lettering Artist

Annie Cicale

Areas of Expertise:
When distinctive lettering is needed for a project, I can create images from letter forms that could not be obtained by just modifying type. In addition, my work includes typography, photography and illustration, including book and newsletter design, brochures and business materials.

Specific Skills:
Fine calligraphy design including logos, taglines and book titles; Unique typeface designs; One of a kind lettering pieces for certificates, memorials and commendations; Distinctive cartography; Technical illustration; Expressive illustration (mostly in watercolor) which include abstract design elements, florals, portraits, still life, and landscape.

Other Experience and Knowledge:
A noted teacher, I have traveled throughout the United States and Canada to teach workshops on the basics of calligraphy, watercolor techniques for calligraphers, logo design, cartography, modification of letterforms and historical scripts. My experimental work has been included in a number of juried and invitational exhibits of fine calligraphy, and I have been an instructor at the annual international calligraphy conferences since 1984. All of this has implications for my commercial work, as I am able to bring fresh and expressive ideas to it.

Primary Software:
I am competent in Photoshop, Pagemaker, QuarkXPress, Microsoft Word, Freehand, Illustrator and Fontographer.

Background:
20 years experience as a professional calligrapher.

Notable Work:
Logo designs for Biltmore Estate (including Michaelmas Fall Festival), logo for the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College, Music Maker Awards for the Swannanoa Gathering. Two of my logos will be included in Letter Arts Review's juried annual in 2001, and others appear in collections of fine lettering such as Lettering Arts and the Speedball Textbook of Calligraphy. Nationally, I am most noted for The Face of Humanity, an Installation Regarding the Population Explosion of the Human Race, which was my MFA thesis project and has been exhibited a number of times since, including at the international calligraphy conference in 1997.

Comments:
I was the Publication Director for the international Association of the Calligraphic Arts for three years, editing and designing their newsletter.
